Hari Nair has a Ph. D. in planetary science for Cal Tech.  He is the creator of Xplanet, the most creative 'desktop decor' program on the web.  Xplanet renders a photo-realistic image of the earth on your desktop.  This image is actively updated throughout the day; showing which parts of the world are in sunlight.  Xplanet even updates the current cloud coverage by downloading satellite weather photos.
